Jo, franchise holder for Birthworks Devon & Cornwall, has recently undertaken training to be a peer support for breastfeeding with the National Childbirth Trust. She has been a main organiser in the setting up of a local group who meets once a week with telephone support during the week.

This involves giving advice and assistance to anyone who wishes for it in relation to breastfeeding.

We are based in Callington and meet every Friday from 10.30 to 12.30 at Callington Library. As stated there is also a telephone network of supporters during the week and if possible a home visit can be arranged. (location dependent on available supporters.)

The National Childbirth Trust wants all mums to feel proud of breastfeeding, whether they breastfeed for one day or one year, as research shows that every feed makes a positive difference to both mother and baby.

Nine out of ten women who stop breastfeeding in the first six weeks are stopping before they want to. The most common reasons given for stopping, reveal that these women often didn't receive the accurate information and support that they needed.

Many people do not realise that the benefits of breastfeeding start straight away. The NCT believes that if more mothers knew this, they would feel it was worth starting breastfeeding even if they are not sure about how long they will continue.

Society has a crucial role in supporting women and by creating a culture where breastfeeding is the norm, more mums will have the confidence to start breastfeeding and their babies will benefit from something unique and special.

Because the benefits start right from the first feed, any amount of breastfeeding is a reason to feel proud.
